You have treasures hidden within you — extraordinary treasures — and so do I, and so does everyone around us. And bringing those treasures to light takes work and faith and focus and courage and hours of devotion, and the clock is ticking, and the world is spinning, and we simply do not have time anymore to think so small. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic
Earlier in the year, I knew I was at the edge of an adventure, though I didn’t know what that adventure was. Something had pulled my attention to the path in front of me, as a new fork had appeared. It looked intriguing though I couldn’t see where it led. So I had a choice: continue on in the direction I was headed, or take a detour and step into the unknown.
I was inspired by the detour, so I stepped into the unknown. And I’m so glad I did. That path has taken me on an amazing roller coaster ride (mostly internal) that I wouldn’t change for the world.
There’s something so exhilarating about following the call of inspiration. You feel a tingle of anticipation and sense the seed of potential of whatever you are being called to do or create. So you bravely and optimistically answer the call. Then you move ahead, no matter how small your steps.
It’s exciting but scary. It takes faith that you have inner treasures to be unearthed and shared with the world. And it takes no small amount of courage — because as you dig deep to find those inner treasures and you nurture that seed of inspiration into something beautiful, you will also unearth things you hadn’t been looking for: fears, self-doubts, and possibly even old soundtracks of limiting beliefs that you’ve subconsciously got on repeat.
You can choose to back away at that point, or continue forth and face what’s coming up to be learned or healed as you walk that path. And there’s no right or wrong — just choice.
Is it worth it, following inspiration into the unknown?
For me, absolutely.
Inspiration reminds us there is untapped beauty within us — and it’ll guide us to that beauty if we’re willing to follow its lead. It shows us, even if just for a moment, that anything is possible.
Dancing with inspiration is such an adventure. And don’t all amazing adventures bring exciting detours and unexpected challenges? Those challenges give us the opportunity to see things in a different light and expand our perception of ourselves and the world around us. They invite us to become the best version of ourselves.
Would it be easier to stay on the same path, follow our usual routine and stick with the status quo?
But if you feel that inner call for more, and it gets stronger and stronger until you can’t ignore it any longer, and if your inner treasures are persistently tugging at you to uncover them, then you may need to adventure into the unknown.
Yes, it takes trust, courage, and a resilient spirit to answer the call of inspiration and to follow that unmarked path. It means having faith that the Universe has your back, and a willingness to put your heart and soul into something that offers no clear outcome.
But the world needs all of us to shine our light — and our love — as brightly as we can, now more than ever. So I invite you to choose your own adventure, whatever that may be, and share more of your beautiful treasures with the world. We need them!
